Menstrual cups are a great alternative to tampons and pads. I had never heard of or tried anything like this until a few months ago so I was a bit skeptical at first. It does take some practice but you shouldn’t feel it once it’s in place.

I still have to change the cup as often as I would a pad or tampon for the first day or two depending on the flow. If inserted properly the cup will not leak unless it is full. After the first day or two I can usually go ahead and wear one cup for the full 12 hours.

The Softcups are designed to be worn for up to 12 hours, however if you happen to forget about it, it is NOT harmful to your body at all, like tampons are. Softcups are ideal because they have no wings or strings; comfortable for sports and can be worn for a long time; eliminates menstrual odor, since the menstrual flow isn’t exposed to air; and you can wear Softcup during intercourse for less messy sex on your period. Although I wouldn’t recommend that last one. My husband had issues with it rubbing and we got rid of it very quickly.

I have not changed the cup in a public restroom yet. Removing a full cup can be a messy process. Some people like to bring a latex glove. If you pull the Softcup out with the glove on, you can take the glove off with your other hand and wrap it up in the glove (inside out). Also, emptying the fluid from the Softcup into the toilet before disposing of it makes for less chance of a mess.

Instead Softcup has been cleared by the FDA and has been on the market for more than 10 years. Both the reusable and disposable Softcup are made entirely of hypoallergenic, non-toxic, latex-free, non-irritating material.

Like I said, it takes practice. If you can feel the cup, take it out and try again because it is not inserted properly. It fits under the cervix and behind the pubic bone so you shouldn’t feel it once it’s in place. It’s best to push straight back and slightly downwards, not up.

The Softcups is not my favorite for heavy days but it’s perfect for light days especially if you are running, or camping with aunt flow. You can also wear a Softcup before you actually start. Since it doesn’t absorb anything and it isn’t harmful to wear for an extend amount of time, you can wear the cup the day before you start so there aren’t any unexpected surprises in the middle of the night or while at work!

I definitely recommend trying them out – you can get a sample pack for just $2.50! They are similar to diaphragm and I’ll admit they seem a little weird at first but you may find them more convenient and comfortable!
