My kids LOVE to paint. Especially my oldest who is 3, she asks constantly. As you can imagine, with a 2 and 3 year old, we go through paint very quickly. So I decided to make our own paint which is cheaper, and more importantly, washable!

DIY Washable Paint Recipe_545

This is a super simple recipe for washable paint. You can use it on the sidewalk like chalk paint – which is great because it easily washes away. OR in the bathtub – which, again, I love because it’s easy to clean off.

DIY Washable Paint Recipe:

  • 1/8 cup cornstarch
  • 1/8 cup bath soap or shampoo
  • 1 tsp water
  • food coloring of your choice
  • containers – muffin/cupcake pan or baby food jars

Mix equal amounts of cornstarch and shampoo – You’ll need one mixture per color. Begin mixing in your food coloring – start with a few drops. Add a small amount of water a little at a time until you get a paint-like consistency.

If it gets too runny, add more cornstarch. If it’s too thick, add water.

Each of my colors filled up the pan about half way, if you want to fill each color to the top of your pan, you could use 1/4 cup of both the cornstarch and soap, instead of the 1/8 cup.

My daughter is obsessed with playing hopscotch right now so we painted rocks for hopscotch in the driveway.

Then we jumped in the sprinkler to wash off. You could always take your leftover paint inside to the bath tub for more fun while getting clean at the same time!

Our doggie enjoyed the sprinkler too!
